Tiong Bahru Bakery is one of Singapore’s best bakery chains. Over the past few years, they have expanded from 1 store to 9 stores. They are famous for their pastry such as Kouign Amann, Croissant, and Tarts. Though they have multiple locations, do expect long queues during weekends. I like that all pastries are reheated in the oven before serving. The flavors are well-balanced, and their pastry is crispy.

Flock Cafe is a nice little cozy and quiet cafe in Tiong Bahru. It is a long rectangle shape cafe so you have sections with make it quiet, cozy but also a little cold as they have 3 big air-con. The Beef burger was dripping with its juice and had a decent umami flavor to it. The waffle batter was thick and crispy accompanied by a perfectly cooked scrambled egg and crispy bacon. An excellent cup of coffee, with smooth, creamy, and fresh beans.

Plain Vanilla is one of Singapore’s best places for cupcakes and is one of the most popular bakeries/cafes in Tiong Bahru. The cupcakes here have a good balance of sweetness, texture, and aroma. Their tarts here also have a good crust with generous filling in it. Their signature Chicken Pesto Orecchiette was also great, it reminds me a lot of a lasagne dish with a hint of pesto in it.

Chapter 55 is one of my favorite casual Italian restaurants. The price point is slightly higher than hawker stall Italian food and their food taste sits right below a good high-end Italian restaurant. I like their Vongole spaghetti here, it has fresh and clean clams, al-dente pasta, and a good balance of flavors. Their Lasagne here is more on the cheesy side with a mild-medium beefy taste. The pizza passed the cheese pull test and also had a good thin crust to it.

5. Merci Marcel

Merci Marcel is a bohemian-style cafe offering a French Balinese vibe. The cafe adds its french twist to your typical cafe food and of course, it comes with a slightly higher price tag. The french toast has a good thickness and holds the fruits, nuts, and cream on top well. The Caesar salad uses kale instead of your typical lettuce which gives the overall salad a different texture. Great flavors but I still prefer the lettuce. Something surprising was their Tarte Flambee 3, which is basically a thin truffle pizza that has a strong truffle aroma and taste.

Caffe Pralet is a small cafe at the corner of the Tiong Bahru estate area. Lesser known cafe but the sandwich and coffee here are excellent. I personally like their Spam Bam sandwich as it has crispy spam, flavorful egg mayo, and fluffy multigrain bread. The coffee latte was smooth, with medium to strong body flavor, and just the right temperature.

Drips Bakery Cafe specializes in tarts and all their tarts are nestled on carefully handcrafted tart shells made with luxurious French butter. Asides from tart, their nasi lemak is also surprisingly good with crispy tenders, sweet and spicy sambal, and fragrant coconut rice. I would probably skip their mushroom pie and replace it with their signature seasonal fruit tart. Their cold drip coffee has a good balance of bitterness and coffee intensity. Lastly, their yuzu macha was something different, love the way they make the flavor balance where you can actually taste the macha and yuzu together.

Ps. Cafe Petit at Tiong Bahru is the best cafe to chill at with its cozy interior and table arrangement. They mainly focus on the takeaway concept thus all the drinks and food are given in a takeaway box/cup. Cafe by day and bar by night is a good mixture for those who like to chill and relax. They are famous for their truffle fries, pizza, and a huge selection of wines.

Creamier is known for its crispy waffles, handcrafted ice cream, and a good cup of coffee. My personal favorite ice cream flavor is their Golden Waffles with Maple Syrup and Summer Strawberries. If you like pour-over coffee, their coffee here is also smooth, medium body, and aromatic. Lastly, their waffles are thick, crispy outside, and fluffy inside.
