Plain Vanilla Review

Verdict

Plain Vanilla is one of Singapore’s best places for cupcakes and is one of the most popular bakeries/cafes in Tiong Bahru. The cupcakes here have a good balance of sweetness, texture, and aroma. Their tarts here also have a good crust with generous filling in it. Their signature Chicken Pesto Orecchiette was also great, it reminds me a lot of a lasagne dish with a hint of pesto in it.

Things I like

  • Excellent cupcakes, good balance of sweetness, texture, and aroma.
  • Great tarts with good crust with generous filling in them.
  • Chicken Pesto Orecchiette was also great, it reminds me a lot of a lasagne dish with a hint of pesto.

Plain Vanilla Tiong Bahru Earl Grey Lavender Muffin
Plain Vanilla Tiong Bahru Earl Grey Lavender Muffin

Plain Vanilla is famous for its cupcakes and they have a ton of selections.

We decided to go with their recommendation, the Earl Grey Lavender Muffin ($4.20). The cake itself was moist and it’s not sweet at all. The sweetness comes from the cream on top of the cupcakes. You can actually taste the earl grey and it was quite prominent but not too much that put it off.

Plain Vanilla Tiong Bahru Cookies & Cream Muffin

The next recommendation was their cookies and cream muffin ($4.20). I love that their muffin is not overly sweet, it was moist and creamy with just the right sweetness.

Plain Vanilla Tiong Bahru Lemon Cheese Tart

The Lemon Cheese Tart ($7.00) was a little expensive, but they were generous with the lemon cheese filling. It had a good balance of sourness, creaminess, and sweetness to it. Of course, the shell itself was solid enough to hold the tart yet soft enough to easily munch on it.

If you like sugary stuff, the cinnamon muffins ($1.20) are the right one for you. Well-coated cinnamon sugar with moist and soft texture muffin.

Plain Vanilla Tiong Bahru Greek Salad

To balance all the cupcakes and muffins, we order their greek salad ($13.00) which was refreshing.

The staff also told us that we got to try their Chicken Pesto Orecchiette ($24.00). It really tasted like a good lasagne for me with a hint of pesto. One of the best pasta we had in a cafe so definitely recommend it.

Plain Vanilla Tiong Bahru Summer Blend Tea

For drinks, we got their Summer blend ($6.00) and a flat white ($5.00).

Plain Vanilla Service & Ambient

The cafe was packed on a weekend lunchtime but we were lucky to only wait 15 minutes for our seat inside the cafe. There is only a limited number of booths so waiting time inside is usually longer than outdoor but it was worth the wait.

The cafe had a nice and cozy environment with a mini booth for privacy and space. It is a good place to chill and perhaps read a book.
