Tiong Bahru Yong Tao Hu Review
Tiong Bahru Yong Tao Hu has been around since the 60s, that’s like 6 decades of history here. Yong Tao Hu or Yong Tau Foo is a Hakka Chinese dish consisting primarily of tofu filled with ground meat or fish paste. This shop mainly focuses on a healthy version of YTF, its clear broth has a mild to plain taste, and each protein was fresh. I prefer the Laksa version as the curry broth makes the dish a little more tasteful. Also, the shop has a smell that might put you off at first but it quickly blent in after just a few minutes in the shop.
Things I like
- Fresh ingredients
- Laksa broth
- Ventilation of the shop. It has a weird smell initially when entered.
- The clear broth tastes a little too plain, and could use more flavouring
Tiong Bahru Yong Tao Hu Food & Price
Tiong Bahru Yong Tao Hu has two type, dry version and laksa.
The dry version small bowl is $5.50 and the bigger bowl is $7.50. There is also an option to add $1 if you want vegetables.
The noodle comes plain and you can add on their special chili along with their sambal sauce to add some flavoring to it. The protein comes standard in this shop, fish ball, tofu, and stuffed bean curd paste. All protein is fresh and it comes in a bowl of soup that is slightly on the plain side in terms of flavouring.
I enjoyed their all-in-one bowl curry Yong Tau Foo ($5.50). The broths gives the whole dish the flavouring that was missing though this is definitely subjective to the individual.
They have two sauce the sambal and their signature chili which went viral in 2018. It was highlighted by news outlets like the Straits Times as they say the chili sauce can make or break the dish.
For drinks, we got their Barley ($1.80) and Ice Lemon Tea ($1.90) which was standard.
Tiong Bahru Yong Tao Hu Service
We were here on a weekend lunch time, the restaurant was a 70% capacity with no queue. Food was served immediately upon ordering.
The shop initially has a weird smell to it but we quickly got over it just after a few minutes of sitting inside.
