Kuey Chap Toa Payoh Review

Verdict

Kuey Chap Toa Payoh is the place to be if you love Kway Chap. Their broadsheets of kway have one of the best consistent textures. The medium body broth has a mild savory and a balance of sweetness to it. Of course, no Kway Chap is complete without its protein. It was all fresh, savory, and has a hint of sweetness to it. To complement all of these together, they have their chili which has a great balance of saltiness, sweetness, and a little sourish.

Things I like

  • Fresh ingredients
  • Texture and width of the kway
  • The flavour is on point

Nitpicking

  • The broth could be hotter.

Their sheets of Kway are the wider size and have just the right amount of thickness to them. The medium body broth has a mild savory and a balance of sweetness to it. Would have been perfect if the broth was a little warmer.

I am not really a fan of the intestine, so I ordered their braised pork belly, tofu, tau pok and of course the kway itself with a total cost of $7.00. Their braised pork belly was flavourful and had a good mix of fat and meat. Tofu here was firm and fresh.

As a side, we also order their braised egg for $2.00 and Lobak Five-spice meat rolls (Ngoh Hiang) for $1.60. The Lobak here has a good thin crispy skin and tastes like just any other Lobak out there.

To complement all of these together, they have their chili which has a great balance of saltiness, sweetness and is a little sourish. I like that the chilli also has a medium-thick consistency to it.

Kuey Chap Toa Payoh Service

Kueh Chap is a popular hawker stall at Toa Payoh so do expect a long queue if you are going during peak time (I waited 30 minutes on a weekday dinner).

Their menus here are all in Chinese and have no pictures so might be hard for some to order. You can just ask the auntie here and tell her what you want.
